1.   Please tell us a little about yourself.

There are two of us: a grandmother and a granddaughter. We specialize in designing fine-quality silk and real-touch wedding floral arrangements. My grandmother, Suzanne, is very sweet and lady-like, has an artistic touch that comes out in all she does, including how she writes her letters and how she makes fudge! She has Dutch ancestors, and displays cute delft china in her kitchen and deep azure glass knickknacks in her kitchen window. Every day she prays for her children and grandchildren, and she encourages us continually to trust in the Lord. Suzanne has been creating custom bouquets and wedding floral arrangements for family, friends, and customers for over thirty years, both in a brick-and-mortar florist shop and at our kitchen table. I am her granddaughter, called Annie after Suzanne’s mother (my great grandmother). I don’t have any of the credentials that my grandmother has, except that I have always loved to design beautiful things and I’ve been learning so much from watching her. I am on the administrative and customer-service side of the business, but I also come up with some of the new designs or product lines.

2.   What inspires you to create your work?

Beauty! My grandmother and I had been at a bit of a stand-still in our creative process one day, but the moment we walked into the flower shop, we instantly had the beginnings of four bouquets in our hands. We just couldn’t help but fill our arms with clusters of hydrangea, ranunculus, orchids, roses, lilacs, ferns, and lilies! We also love to clip photos and scraps of magazines, as it helps us visualize what flowers and textures will complement each other. The styles we love could be defined as traditional, fairy-tale, Victorian, shabby-chic, and anything that reminds us of an English country garden.

3.   What is your favorite thing to make/sell?

My grandmother loves her Sweet Pea Bride’s Bouquet. The whimsical tendrils of the sweet peas are part of a line of “natural touch” artificial flowers that are so real that Suzanne said she kept wanting to smell them as she was hand-tying them together. My personal favorite is the Calla Lily Bouquet because it’s so bright and full of life. A reviewer recently called this bouquet “atypical”… like something from a fairy fantasy wedding…” I guess that’s probably why I like it too!

4.   What is the best part about being a Christian artist and seller?

God exists, and He governs our lives with wisdom. We live day by day with that fulfilling knowledge! We seek the beauty of the Lord to establish all that we do (Psalm 90). That means that God’s law is in our hearts and we answer to a higher authority than our own artistic instinct. God’s standard is far more beautiful, righteous, and relevant than anything we could come up with on our own. God created the first beautiful things, and all we do is rearrange them so they are displayed to best advantage.

5.   Why do you do what you do?

We love being surrounded by beautiful things. Some days I feel like I’m living in a perpetually blooming flower garden! We also just love brides and getting to know their stories. This is a special time in their lives and we are rejoicing with them.

6.   What are your hobbies?

Suzanne sings in her church choir, bakes amazing cakes that don’t fall in Colorado’s high altitude, and loves spending time with her loved ones at tea shops, antique stores, or used bookstores. She also loves pansies and has two gigantic whiskey barrels planted full of their cheery faces all summer long.

Working is actually really fun for me, and my happiest days are when I have plenty of profitable tasks to complete. I live with my parents and two brothers, and I love it when everyone is home and we can get out a game or all sit by the fire on a cold evening and talk or read together.  Writing, sewing, drawing, playing the piano, and being outside in the mountains are some other things I love.

7.   What is your favorite book/movie/music?

My grandmother and I both love the Jane Austen books and movies and the Anne of Green Gables series. I also like to read puritan writers, C. S. Lewis, Charles Dickens, G. K. Chesterton, R. J. Rushdoony, John Calvin, David McCullough.

Our music tastes are varied: we both love Handel’s Messiah and Vivaldi’s Gloria. Other favorites are anything choral, celtic, folk, big band, and Nat King Cole, Debussy, Bach, and Beethoven.

8.   What is one of your most well-loved Bible verses?

Psalm 37:3-6

Trust in the LORD, and do good;

Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.

Delight yourself also in the LORD,

And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the LORD,

Trust also in Him,

And He shall bring it to pass.

He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,

And your justice as the noonday.

Featured Artist: A Sense of Place Photography on Etsy!

Hi. I’m Katie King, and I’m very excited to be here and meet Brittany as well as you readers! I fall into the young married & quirky self-employed category.  I’ve been blessed with a handsome husband, recent college diploma, and cute puppy, so I don’t really know what else I could ask for at this point except for a part-time job, which I’m working on.

My hobbies are making art & ideas. Maybe God wants me to be an art & idea match-maker, I can’t tell yet.  Thanks to Him, I can write songs, plays, and make photographs. I enjoy researching artists, installations, movements & manifestos.

I love Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close very much. Forrest Gump is my favorite movie, hands down although I did really recently enjoy Megamind. I would see that movie twice.

Music is a biggie for me. I enjoy Paleo, Neutral Milk Hotel, Tegan & Sara, Deb Talan, Dido, Feist & Thomas Function, just to name a few.

My most recently loved Bible verse is one that one of my non-Christian friends ironically introduced to me. Proverbs 20:24 “Since the Lord is directing our steps, why try to understand everything that happens along the way?”. What peace and protection that gives, especially for an over-analytical worry wart like me!

The best part about being a Christian shop owner is the challenge and responsibility that comes a long with it. I’m not just representing myself, I’m representing Him. I’m not just in this for personal gain, I’m in this to share his Glory and to be a light for others. Knowing that is one thing, but choosing how to do that is something special. I’m feel like I’m not giving back unless I actually, well, give back. My ideal goal with A Sense Of Place Photography is to become a charity that harbors several different artists that can give one piece of fine art to every house built by Habitat For Humanity, free of charge. It is an idea I am only just starting to consider and network towards.

Here are some of my photographs that help me to sit back & enjoy life. One of my missions as a photographer is to try and catch God through film. It is when I photograph beautiful mountainous landscapes especially that I am simply taken aback by His presence. For example in this photograph: http://www.flickr.com/photos/asenseofplacephotography/4051516219/in/set-72157622560867659/. I hope you can find Christ’s vast love in whatever your sense of place is.

Thanks for looking and thanks so much for having me here!

Featured Artist: Knit Matters on Etsy!

Knit Matters is a shop with handmade items made with good, quality yarns and they are carefully designed for everyday use.

She knits to order, and also offers yarns, needles, felting yarns and gift wrapping and much much more!
She also stocks Novita yarns, which are high quality Finnish yarns, durable, versatile and made with 80 years of knitting know-how.

1. Please tell us a little about yourself.

I’m 35 years old, and I’ve been knitting for last 24 years. I’ve been knitting since I was 11 (the basic’s in knitting and other crafts are taught to us in primary school), but I do have to admit after being forced to knit a pair of woolly gloves, where the end result was neon pink yarn (think 80’s) covered with tears and snot as the finishing result, not to mention other glove being 3 times bigger than other, I swore not to knit ever again. This oath lasted until my older sister waltzed in to our kitchen wearing a stunning hand knitted jumper! I desperately wanted to have exactly the same jumper and more importantly I wanted to learn how to make one. So after quite many painful attempts and endless advice from both, my mother and sister, I finished off my first jumper and haven’t stopped since.

2. What inspires you to create your work?

My biggest inspiration comes from every day life and fashion trends of course. As a mother and lover of clothes, I do get frustrated with items that look good, feel horrid to wear or items which don’t fill the purpose. As an example, my son needed a pair of gloves for winter, and we bought him a spiderman styled ones from well known clothes shop. The end result of this frustrating purchase was that my son looks cool, but his hands are freezing as gloves are made from such an synthetic material it’s equal to usefulness of wearing a plastic bag in minus degrees. I can do better job by making a pair of gloves by myself, from yarn which is washable, warm and skin friendly.

3. What is your favorite thing to make/sell?

I’ m most well known from my slippers and cardigans, I love wearing them, and knitting them-hence my obsession with these items.

4. What is the best part about being a Christian seller?

The best part of being a Christian seller is the team CAC, in Etsy.

5. Why do you do what you do?

I do my handycrafts to keep the beauty and sensibility in my life. I work in every day life in a normal cruel business enviroment, which involves around money and making of it. My knitting is a way out of that world, using God’s given gifts to create something beautiful out of a string of yarn.

6. What are your hobbies?

My hobbies are knitting (I could not resist, sorry…), reading, movies and my family and my dog.

7. What is your favorite book/movie/music?

I love rock’n roll, and the films by Pedro Almodovar, Kieslowski, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. The list of the favorite book is endless, as it includes everything between Portrait of Dorian Gray to Anna Karenina and to a Liisa Seppälä’s book about Celtic Christianity.

8. What is one of your most well-loved Bible verses?

My most loved bible verse is 1. Cor. 13:1–8, as it reminds me of the gift of love, and how to pass it forward, which is not as easy as it sounds. Other one is Jeremiah 29:11, which is a good reminder of God’s plans for us.
