1. Please tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Telika Howard, I am 30 years old and I have been married for 9 years with four kids and one on the way. I have a degree in journalism and besides being an author, I write many articles about youth, family, and current events all from a Christian perspective. I have a special passion for writing fictional stories of teens/young adults and their dilemmas while coming into their transition of life from youth to adulthood, while figuring out who exactly they are both physically and spiritually. This is exactly what the main character in Out of the Miry Clay is facing in the midst of never knowing her father and the recent death of her mother, and being raised by her older sister all while trying to figure out how to come into her own and what exactly is the meaning of her life.
2. What inspires you to create your work?
My inspiration comes from my own journey into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, especially the mistakes I’ve made along the way and all I’ve learned (so far) and wanting to share that. Also my genuine desire to entertain people while teaching them, and informing them without judging them.
3. What is the best part about being a Christian author?
The best part about being a Christian author is all the positive feedback. I love reading emails about how something I’ve written has helped somebody else. Especially the ones that have been coming in about Out of the Miry Clay. It’s a blessing to see a work you have done come to bless someone else especially a young person. To me, that is the true essence of success.
4. Why do you do what you do?
I do what I do because I believe that’s what I’m called to do. I love writing and I’ve always known I would be a writer since I was about 10 years old. Whenever something would happen that would try and make me quit writing or doubt that I should be a writer, a door would always open for me just at that moment bringing me forward.
5. What are your hobbies?
In my spare time, I enjoy reading and connecting with friends online as well as having fun playing games with my family.
6. What is your favorite book/movie/music?
My favorite book is Rhythms of Grace by Marilynn Griffith, my favorite CD is Kirk Franklin’s Hero.
7. What is one of your most well-loved Bible verses?
There are so many Bible verses that I think about throughout the day but my most favorite would have to be Isaiah 49:15-16: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” I plan to get this scripture (or part of it) on the palm of my hand or near by it in the next couple of months.
